A Fun 'Green' Morning

15 April 2017

RA SS20 Central Zone successfully organised its first Art & Craft Class cum Coffee Morning Potluck. Food was aplenty, contributed by members (roti jala with curry chicken, fried meehoon, pulut inti kelapa, varieties of kuih nonya and boiled eggs, etc).

The 3-R recycling concept (Reuse, Reduce and Recycle) was put into practice. Everyone brought along their own food and drink utensils for the morning breakfast.

For the Art & Craft Class, the ladies (and some men) joined in the making of bags from old T-Shirts. So nice to see them showing off their wonderful handicraft. The next Art & Craft Class will be the making of bags from old jeans.

There was also a side-demo on planting of herbs using discarded plastic bottles. The RA will be pursuing this "urban / vertical gardening" project this year.

Thank you to our Councillor, Cik Jamaliah Jamaluddin and our neighbourhood police, Sgt Mat Din and the MPV team for dropping over to show their support for our activity.

We have been informed that we can dispose of the used oil to the MBPJ Recycling Truck that comes to the Central Zone every Tuesday.

Place the used oil into a bottle. Wait for the truck. Let them know that you have used oil for recycling. They will weigh the oil and pay you 80 sen per kg.

Community garden project gets new life

“KEBUN Kita”, a rebranded version of the “Kebun Komuniti” initiative, will be launched early next month at the Section 8 Kota Damansara PPR Flats in Petaling Jaya.
“The site, which was formerly filled with bushes and undergrowth, will be turned into a vegetable, herb and fruit garden,” said Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) Landscape Department director Zuraidah Sainan.
Kebun Kita (Our Garden) involves a collaboration of individuals and agencies that will share their expertise and skills.
The earlier Kebun Komuniti (Community Garden) initiative only involved resident groups and MBPJ.
“The project will serve as a platform for urban farming and foster closer ties among residents.  READ MORE

A Plea to Dog Owners

13 March 2017
From Dr Joe Samy (former Environmental Committee Chairman of RA SS20 Central)

A Plea to Dog Owners

I wake up bright and early in the morning on hearing the sound of chirping birds and walk out into the garden to smell the aromatic jasmine flowers. To my dismay on opening the gate I get a whiff of a dog poop at the end of the drive way. This is the usual dilemma of most residents living in SS20 Central. It is now common to see dog poop all over the side of the road and one has to be careful when alighting out of the car least they step on a dog poop.  Some of the side roads are so badly littered with dog poop that one has to very carefully maneuver their way when walking to avoid the poop.

A resident recounts that in his village it is usual to encounter dog poop everywhere as there are many dogs running around scavenging for food.  He expected it to be different in a city like Petaling Jaya, especially with mostly affluent residents staying in SS20 Central.  We cannot blame this on stray dogs as the Residents Association with the cooperation with MBPJ has rounded up as many as 15 dogs and taken them out of SS20 Central.

Even the children’s playing field is littered with dog poop. One may be sitting on a bench enjoying a quiet peaceful moment, only to realize much later that just beside the bench there is a dog poop. This would be extremely unpleasant and spoil the mood of the person for the whole day. By right dogs are not allowed in the field, but some residents bring their dogs to the field. Some dog owners allow their dogs to run around freely and they sometimes run into the field or overturn dustbins scavenging for food much to the annoyance of neighbours.

We are indeed appreciative of residents who walk their dogs on leash with plastic bags and a small shovel to scoop up the poop, as is practiced in developed countries. However these same dog owners allow the dogs on leash to urinate freely anywhere they like, even on plants specially planted outside the houses. These may be herbs planted to add flavour to the cooking, or pandan that many neighbours harvest the leaves to add aroma to their cakes. Dog owners should be careful and watch where the dogs urinate so that the neighbours’ plants are not contaminated.

These are some of the issues we would like to bring to the attention of dog owners so that there is some concerted effort in the control and management of dog poop. Some residents voiced the use of CCTV cameras to monitor the movement of dogs but it is better for dog owners themselves to realize the responsibilities of dog ownership and exercise some measure of control so that the neighbours are not annoyed. However, these CCTV footages can be retrieved, if required, as we have used them to monitor and identify crime.

Maybe with the planting of more trees bearing aromatic flowers in the future will help to drown the whiff of dog poop and urine. Let us smell the sweet jasmine and not the poop in SS20 Central.

RA SS20 Central is plastic-free

All members who attended the recent AGM held on Saturday were given door gifts consisting of a stainless steel food container with a spoon and a stainless steel bottle.
Members are encouraged to bring these items for future RA functions as we not provide disposable plates/cups/cutlery anymore. Residents can also make use of the food container and bottle when they buy food or drinks.
This is one of the development projects proposed in our submission for the MBPJ Sustainable Community Award 2016 and part of the RA's effort to help residents cultivate a more eco-friendly lifestyle.

Double Celebration for RA SS20 Central

12 February 2017
RA SS20 Central celebrated CNY 2017 and also their winning of RM30,000 in the ‘Inisiatif Habitat’ Category from the Anugerah Sustainable Community Award Petaling Jaya 2016.

This is one of the RA’s many events to foster close ties among the residents in SS20.

Activities included a lion dance performance sponsored by Mr N K Leong, RA Committee member and line dancing performance by our very own SS20 line dancing group, headed by Rowena Leong and Carole Loke.

We were also very lucky to have the presence of YB Tony Pua (MP, PJ Utara), YB Yeo Bee Yin (ADUN Damansara Utama), AM Jamaliah Jamaluddin (MBPJ Councillor, Zone 9) and also Ms Grace Yong (YB Yeo’’s Asst) to join us in our celebration.

YB Tony, YB Yeo and AM Jamaliah made it so much more fun and enjoyable for all when they sportingly joined the residents in the ‘Chicken Dance’. YB Yeo had the kids smiling when she distributed angpows to them!
Also present were our friendly police Kpl Zamzuri and his team of police personnel.

Thank you to our VIP guests, the police and all our residents who contributed food and are always there to support the activities of the RA.
