PETALING JAYA: Crime rate is down but Malaysians still do not feel so, hence the focus will be on improving public confidence on safety, says the Government Transforma­tion Programme (GTP) report.

It stated that the country’s crime index had decreased by 26.8% since the first phase of the GTP began in 2009.

Malaysia has been ranked the safest and most peaceful country in South East-Asia according to the Global Peace Index, said the GTP report.

It also recorded around 550.1 criminal incidents per 100,000 population, placing Malaysia lower than Singapore, Hong Kong, Britain and the United States. .. Read more .....  

Northern Zone - Gated & Guarded?

In the face of rising crime rates, a concerned group of residents in the Northern Zone are proposing to have their area gated and guarded.

Leaflets for feedback have been sent to the affected residents. They are in the process of gathering responses and are trying to work out the details.

Residents who would like to give their feedback/suggestions can join in their discussion which is held at 10 a.m.on each Saturday at the Northern Zone field.

Befriend the police to fight crime, public urged

KLANG: Selangor police chief Datuk Tun Hisan Tun Hamzah has asked the public to make the police their friend to ensure effective crime prevention in residential areas.

"If you see policemen stopping a man by the roadside, you think they are asking for bribes, although they could be just asking for directions," he said during the ground-breaking ceremony of a new police beat base at Bandar Parklands here yesterday.

Tun Hisan added that police beat bases in housing areas should not only be regarded as a place to lodge reports but also a meeting point to discuss public safety. Read more ....

MBPJ brightens lanes with solar powered lights

SEVERAL dark backlanes and small roads in Petaling Jaya have been installed with more than 120 solar-powered lights under the Petaling Jaya City Council’s (MBPJ) safe city programme.

This is the council’s inaugural project after receiving funds of more than RM1mil (for last year) from the Implementation Coordination Unit under the Prime Minister’s Department.

The MBPJ engineering department (mechanical and electrical division) assistant engineer Mohd Hazimi Khalid said the project had four packages with each focusing on the different sections of Petaling Jaya.

As SS20 does not have these lights installed in our backlanes, the police has suggested that we arrange with our neighbours and take turns to switch on our back lights .....

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysians have been bombarded with news reports of break-ins, sexual assaults and road bullies in the last few years. We don’t need news reports to inform us that the crime rate is escalating. Many of us have either fallen victim to criminals in recent times, or know of friends and relatives who have.

Security, it seems, has become a prized commodity. It is for this reason that gated and guarded (G&G) developments are becoming popular with Malaysians even though it comes with a high price tag. “The crime rate in KL is high, despite what the official figures say.

So, when developers come up with a gated and guarded development, there is a premium on the price that buyers are prepared to pay for,” says James Wong, director of VPC Alliance (KL) Sdn Bhd.

Security aside, G&G concepts are being built in response to consumers’ desire for better living standards, says Eric Ooi Yew Hock, managing director of real-estate advisory firm Knight Frank Malaysia. They give middle- and upper-income earners an upgraded lifestyle, he adds. Read more ....
