14 August 2017

RA SS20 Central presented 3R bins to SMK Damansara Utama (SMKDU).

We applaud the efforts and commitment taken by SMKDU in waste management and caring for the environment. Our single effort may seem small but if everyone of us does our part, then Mother Earth will be a better place for all. Well done!

Getting them to think before throwing

Recyclables collected by MBPJ from households at Jalan SS20/14

OUR homes have unwanted items waiting to be discarded, but often these things can be fixed, refurbished or cleaned up to be another person’s treasure.
Old washing machines, among other electrical products, photo frames and plastic containers are tossed out with the trash and end up in the landfill.
Furthering its environmental campaign, Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) is stepping up its waste separation project in several neighbourhoods by allocating two dedicated trucks to collect recyclable items from residential properties.    Read more ......

We are Recycling

5 April 2016

Day 1 of Pilot Programme for Single Stream Waste Separation at Jalan SS20/14 started smoothly with residents bringing out their recyclables enthusiastically for the MBPJ 3R truck.

Single stream waste separation is a vey simple and convenient process to recycle whereby residents are required to place all the recyclable items like paper, tin/aluminium cans, glass and plastic into one large clear plastic bag for collection at their doorstep by MBPJ once a week.

The RT SS20 and RA SS20 Central are working together with MBPJ to make recycling a breeze for everyone so that more households in SS20 can join in the recycling habit to help to conserve the natural resources and reduce the waste that goes into the landfills.

Recycling cooking oil into biodiesel

Housewives, students and restaurateurs are saving up their used cooking oil – for a good reason.

INSTEAD of pouring fryer oil down the sink like she used to, Sheila Varghese now dutifully tips the stale fats into an old water bottle. And once that is full, she heads to the central rubbish disposal shed at her condo in Petaling Jaya, Selangor, and empties it into a huge drum. This has become a common practice among the residents of Armanee Terrace. The grease collection drive is a green move among the condo residents and management to recycle used cooking oil into biodiesel.

“If we don’t do this, all the oil ends up in pipes and grease traps,” says Varghese. “Not all the oil is removed, so the grease still goes into the sewerage system. This makes water treatment to remove the oil more difficult. So the oil eventually ends up in our water supply and comes back to us. If all of us prevent oil from entering drains and rivers, then we’ll be helping ourselves and reducing the maintenance cost of our condos’ grease traps.”

Perhaps we could also have a grease collection drive in SS20 .....
