Joint effort: The SS20 neighbourhood is among the most successful participants of the MBPJ waste separation pilot project. The neighbourhood started with 20 houses at the start of the project in April and has extended to 200 houses in August. — Sia Hong Kiau/The Star

Experts believe that residents in cities like Petaling Jaya are well aware of the need to separate their waste, but to make it a sustainable practice, there are other factors that need to be in place.
Good leadership at neighbourhood level, recognition and consistent separated waste collection mechanism are among them. Single stream waste separation is another pull factor.
Waste management experts said the authorities should also review the effectiveness of recycling bins placed in neighbourhoods.   READ MORE ......

Dogs, Security, Rubbish, Recycling

Below are some of the current community topics that are being highlighted and discussed within our SS20 forums: whatsapp, facebook and blogs:

1) Dogs - The stray dog population has been reduced from 8 dogs to about 3 now. The topic of concern is our own residents letting out their dogs to defecate at other residents' front and side areas. A few residents will be approaching us to view the CCTV footage to identify and record the dogs/owners. We applaud those dog owners who walk their dogs on a leash and clean up after the dog does its business.

2) Security - Three separate security incidents occurred in the Southern Zone earlier this week: a house break-in, shoes stolen and snatch thief case. We should continue to be vigilant of our home and surrounding areas. The Police has advised that security incidents are expected to increase just before a festive period.

3) Rubbish - MBPJ has on 1st June appointed a new contractor for general cleaning, grass cutting, domestic waste and garden waste. The contractor is in the process of "trying to catch-up" on these areas. We want to encourage residents to help in the effort to keep our environment clean and neat. This will include for example: putting your kitchen waste in a garbage bin, putting your garden cuttings into a bag or tying it up, putting these garden cuttings/other waste in front of your own house and not creating "illegal dumping spots".
Please do not create illegal dumping spots

4) Single-Stream Waste Separation - The MBPJ sponsored recycling project on roads 14 and 16 has been going well. Please bring out your yellow bin only on Tuesday morning as close to 10:00 am as possible. There has been one incident where a bin was taken away by a "cyclist waste collector".
MBPJ is now working on the details to extend the project to the other roads in the Central Zone.
Please place yellow recycle bin in front of your house every Tuesday morning at 10am

We are Recycling

5 April 2016

Day 1 of Pilot Programme for Single Stream Waste Separation at Jalan SS20/14 started smoothly with residents bringing out their recyclables enthusiastically for the MBPJ 3R truck.

Single stream waste separation is a vey simple and convenient process to recycle whereby residents are required to place all the recyclable items like paper, tin/aluminium cans, glass and plastic into one large clear plastic bag for collection at their doorstep by MBPJ once a week.

The RT SS20 and RA SS20 Central are working together with MBPJ to make recycling a breeze for everyone so that more households in SS20 can join in the recycling habit to help to conserve the natural resources and reduce the waste that goes into the landfills.

One bag for all recyclables

Road 14 residents were briefed by Puan Marini from Jabatan Pengurusan Sisa Pepejal dan Pembersihan Awam, MBPJ on how the single stream waste separation works.
The pilot program is set to start on Tuesday, 5 April 2016 for Road 14. Residents will need to place all the recyclable items into just one large clear plastic bag provided by MBPJ. Collection of these items will be carried out by MBPJ once a week.

Single Stream Waste Separation Pilot Programme

4 March 2016

MBPJ will run a pilot programme on single stream waste separation for houses on Road 14 soon.

The RA SS20 Central and RT SS20 Damansara Utama held their first meeting with Mr Lee Lih Shyan (Director of Solid Waste and Public Cleansing Management Dept, MBPJ) and Ms Marini (MBPJ personnel) on 4th March to plan for this pilot programme.

In this programme, residents only need to place all the recyclables into one bin.

Single-stream waste separation is the simplified approach to environmental conservation and is aimed to reduce the amount of waste that goes into landfills and cut expenditure.
