Voluntary patrolling should extend to all housing areas

KUALA LUMPUR: The Voluntary Patrolling Scheme (VPS) should be extended to all housing areas in the city to ensure security and help the authorities check crime, said Federal Territories and Urban Wellbeing Minister Datuk Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin.

"The VPS is capable of contributing to reducing crime rates and ensuring unity of the people is protected from any element that can cause worry and fear," he said after the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the National Unity and Integration Department and police in Taman Seri Sentosa, here, tonight.

He said the government was concerned about problems faced by the VPS and was ready to offer help if needed.

"The department is making effort to provide patrolling equipment and tackle the shortage of places to build Rukun Tetangga control centres to facilitate the VPS.  Read more .....

SEEING land surveyors at the field near his house in SS20, Damansara Kim, Petaling Jaya, resident N. K. Leong approached them to see what was happening.

Leong, who has been staying in the area for more than 20 years, claimed that the surveyors told him that there were plans to build terrace houses at the site of the playground in Jalan SS20/13.

Offenders can stop vehicles from being towed

KUALA LUMPUR: Motorists have the right to stop City Hall enforcement officers who are in the midst of towing their vehicle.

City Hall deputy director-general Datuk Mohd Amin Nordin Abdul Aziz said motorists have the right to ask the enforcement officer to release their vehicles.

"The enforcement officer will return the vehicle provided the motorist cooperates by giving his details to the officer issuing the compound. If he fails to do so, then the officer will tow the vehicle," he said.

Gangs preying on bank customers busted

An iron spike used by the gang to be placed under car tyres being shown at a press conference at the Jalan Tun Razak police station in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

KUALA LUMPUR: Pretty women in tudung, iron spikes to puncture car tyres, handphones and warm smiles were all that a gang of Latin American crooks needed to steal from bank customers.

Using these "weapons", the gang had amassed RM600,000 from five cases committed here in the past three months.

Police called them "professional thieves" as they had all their bases covered.

Their ploy was simple. The female gang members would be stationed inside a bank and they would inform their accomplices waiting outside of a possible target.  Read more ......    

New Act for Kawasan Rukun Tetangga

KUALA LUMPUR: The Kawasan Rukun Tetangga (KRT) programme is scheduled to have a new enactment tabled in Parliament that would effectively replace its current Act that was formulated in 1975 under the Emergency Ordinance (EO) 1969, which is to be repealed.

According to the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon, the new Act would also include the Voluntary Patrol Scheme (VPS) under the KRT. Read more .....   

Ram-and-rob gangs on the prowl

If you are in the habit of driving home late at night, beware

Criminals are using the old “ram-and-rob” ploy against motorists in the city lately.

These robbers would normally seek out motorists driving luxury cars along roads with minimal traffic, usually late at night, before deliberately knocking into the back of the victims’ cars.

When the victims got down to assess the damage, the thieves would have no problem hijacking the vehicles and speeding off due to the lack of traffic during that hours.

City police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Mohmad Salleh said police investigations revealed that there were more than one group scouring the city centre and its surrounding areas. Read more ......
