MBPJ Sustainable Community Award

We are pleased to inform that the RA SS20 Central is taking part in the Sustainable Community Award or Anugerah Perdana Komuniti Mampan organized by MBPJ. 

The Anugerah Perdana Komuniti Mampan is an annual event open to all registered RAs, RTs and Village Development Communities in PJ. Its aim is to instil social values such as gotong-royong culture in the community and to encourage them to improve and beautify their housing areas.

The 1st prize winner will receive RM50,000 development grant, the mayor's trophy, a certificate and a token of appreciation. 2nd prize is RM25,000 and 3rd prize is RM10,000.

A panel of judges will be making a site visit to the Central Zone at 2:30 pm on Saturday, 1 Nov 2014. 

Dato' Vincent Ng, RA SS20 Chairman will be giving a presentation at the Community Policing Cabin at Jalan SS20/14.  

The RA SS20 Central Committee would like to make a special request to all residents to help spruce up their garden and surrounding areas so as to make our neighbourhood presentable and neat to the judges.

Using Security Stickers or Visitors Pass To Enter Jalan SS20/6

In order to accommodate non residents who wish to enter Jalan SS20/6, security guards will allow SS20 residents who have Central Zone, South Zone & Rukun Tetangga security stickers to enter.

Non residents without security stickers who wish to enter Jalan SS20/6, can register themselves with the security guards. They will be issued a visitor pass. 

We hope that non residents who wish to enter Jalan SS20/6 will accommodate the above system. Your cooperation will help deter families living on road 6, 8 & 9 from crime incidences.

Please note that the exit near TA securities building (facing Tropicana Mall) will still continue to be closed from 11pm-6am.

MBPJ advised to keep recruits to 50

SMALLER is better — that was the Selangor Police Contingent’s (IPK) feedback on the formation of an auxiliary police force.

Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) public relations director Haniza Abdul Hamid said the council had proposed 100 recruits for its auxiliary police application but IPK had advised the council to keep it to 50.

Guidelines on gated communities soon

SUBANG JAYA: Residents’ associations (RAs) in Selangor will be invited to give their input on gated and guarded (G&G) communities at a seminar being organised soon by the state.

The event, to be hosted by the Selangor Land and Mines Office (PTG), will be held next week and will seek to draw up guidelines for G&G communities.

“Once the guidelines are drawn up, they will be brought to the state executive council to be endorsed,” said state executive councillor Teresa Kok.

She said there have been many complaints against RAs which have chosen to employ makeshift G&G infrastructure around their neighbourhood.

Among the security measures taken by residents include installing guardhouses, boom gates and barriers made of metal barrels and barbed wire.

Some RAs have permanently blocked roads which prevent emergency services like police cars or fire engines from passing through.

Kok gave an example of the Taman Puchong Hartamas development where a guardhouse erected by the developer had to be torn down by the local council last year.

The structure was deemed illegal as it did not obtain a Temporary Occupancy Licence (TOL) from the Subang Jaya Municipal Council (MPSJ).

“Since the guardhouse was demolished, the  area experienced an increase in crime, resulting in a wave of about eight break-ins,” she said.

Residents were also left fuming when Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) officers tore down a security barrier in their neighbourhood along Jalan SS20/17 last January.

Residents claimed the barriers brought down crime after they were installed. 

Previously, they were the victims of break-ins, snatch thefts and even assaulted with cleavers.

The G&G concept has been a contentious issue in the state, sometimes pitting neighbours against each other as they disagree on fencing up their community.

Some RAs or Rukun Tetangga (RT) see  barricades as a safety feature.

Those who disagree are usually concerned with the closure of roads which may inconvenience them and hinder emergency services.

The state government issued its own guidelines in 2010 which proposed that at least 80% of residents must support the G&G concept before implementation.

This differs from a Federal government guideline which suggests only a 51% support.

“I believe this has to be decided on a case-by-case basis. It should be allowed if there are no objections (from surrounding residents),” Kok added.

Appreciation dinner for volunteers and police

AS A gesture of appreciation for their efforts throughout 2012, members of the SS20 Rukun Tetangga (RT) Community Policing team were treated to an appreciation dinner with members of the police present as guests as well.

The dinner took place on Dec 27 at Riah Garden Restaurant in SS20, Petaling Jaya.

In addition to the volunteers and police, representatives from residents’ associations (RAs) and RTs from other parts of Petaling Jaya were also present.

SS20 RT chairman Eileen Thong said the efforts of the volunteers were greatly valued, and had not gone unnoticed.      Read more .....   

MBPJ’s RM344mil budget

IN WHAT appears to the largest budget in its history, the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) yesterday agreed to mayor Datuk Mohamad Roslan Sakiman’s proposed RM344mil budget for 2013.

This is to be Roslan’s last budget as Petaling Jaya’s mayor.

It was agreed upon after the councillors felt that the Environmental and Health Department needed extra funds to purchase five roll-on/roll-off lorries as standby waste collection units after residents’ complaints of contractors not fufilling their jobs.

In addition, the current “emergency” funds allocated to expedite council services has been increased by RM3mil to RM7mil.

In terms of social development, active residents’ associations (RA) and Rukun Tetangga (RT) will have their allocations increased — from the current RM3,000 to RM5,000 for RAs, and RM1,000 to RM3,000 for RTs.

RAs and RTs that had successfully instituted Neighbourhood Safety Teams will be given an annual RM5,000 each.       Read more ....    

New Rukun Tetangga laws to be enacted soon

KUALA LUMPUR: New laws for the neigbourhood watch (Rukun Tetangga) will be enacted to replace the existing provisions under the Emergency Ordinance Act 1969.

Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Dr Koh Tsu Khoon said the new Neighbourhood Watch and Voluntary Patrolling Scheme will replace the Neighbourhood Watch Regulations 1975 under the Emergency Ordinance Act 1969, which is to be repealed soon.

"We welcome any public feedback and suggestions to further improve the Act," he told reporters at Parliament lobby here Monday.

On a related matter, he said the 130,000-odd members of Voluntary Patrolling Scheme were given a 24-our of accident insurance coverage.

"They are also given a bereavement allowance of RM1,000," he said.
He added that some 142 members had passed away between 2007 and 2010, adding that their deaths were not related to duty operations.

Voluntary patrolling should extend to all housing areas

KUALA LUMPUR: The Voluntary Patrolling Scheme (VPS) should be extended to all housing areas in the city to ensure security and help the authorities check crime, said Federal Territories and Urban Wellbeing Minister Datuk Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin.

"The VPS is capable of contributing to reducing crime rates and ensuring unity of the people is protected from any element that can cause worry and fear," he said after the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the National Unity and Integration Department and police in Taman Seri Sentosa, here, tonight.

He said the government was concerned about problems faced by the VPS and was ready to offer help if needed.

"The department is making effort to provide patrolling equipment and tackle the shortage of places to build Rukun Tetangga control centres to facilitate the VPS.  Read more .....   

MBPJ gives RM5,000 to teams to carry out Safe City initiatives

THE Petaling Jaya City Council has given incentive payments of RM5,000 each to 56 eligible teams during the launch of MBPJ’s Petaling Jaya Safe Neighbourhood Team (PKKPJ) programme recently.

The money was handed over to the teams by mayor Datuk Mohamad Roslan Sakiman.
Roslan said RM1mil has been allocated for this programme to attract voluntary activities by the residents to assist the council and the police in ensuring the safety of the people in Petaling Jaya.

“We have briefed all residents’ associations (RA) and Rukun Tetangga (RT) about the programme and its pre-requisites.

“The RM5,000 will serve as an annual allowance for each team to utilise for their PKKPJ activities in all 24 zones. Read more ...........
