Liu: Selangor aims for four-times-a-week garbage collection

THE frequency of garbage collection in Selangor could be increased to four times a week compared with the current thrice weekly services in residential areas.

Local government committee chairman Ronnie Liu said that since the local councils in Selangor took over the services from Alam Flora on Oct 15, the Klang Municipal Council (MPK) has started collecting garbage four times a week.

“We will be trying out the system in Klang and hope to implement the same in other areas in Selangor. The money saved from taking back the services would be channelled back to increase the frequency of garbage collection,” said Liu. Read more .......

Robbery in Damansara Uptown

On Tuesday, at about 7:30 pm, several people who were carrying out banking transactions at the atm machines in CIMB Bank, Damansara Uptown were robbed by a young Malay man. He was wearing a white helmet and armed with a parang.

The customers were ordered to hand over their cash. No one was hurt in the incident.

If possible, try not to go to the bank at night.

Residents rally to save field

Residents staging a protest against the redevelopment of the PKNS field and sports complex in Kelana Jaya, yesterday. The demonstration aims to highlight the fact that the proposed redevelopment of the field was not simply a local issue, but a national concern that an increasing number of open spaces and fields were being sacrificed for development.

 KUALA LUMPUR: About 200 residents protested against the redevelopment of the 30-year-old Selangor State Development Corporation (PKNS) field and sports complex in Kelana Jaya yesterday.

SS7 neighbourhood action committee chairman Datuk Zul Mukhshar Md Shaari said the residents demonstrated for two hours against the planned development.

"We have collected 200 signatures in a petition to save the people's field," he said.

An objection would be sent to the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ). Read more ......  

New Rukun Tetangga laws to be enacted soon

KUALA LUMPUR: New laws for the neigbourhood watch (Rukun Tetangga) will be enacted to replace the existing provisions under the Emergency Ordinance Act 1969.

Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Dr Koh Tsu Khoon said the new Neighbourhood Watch and Voluntary Patrolling Scheme will replace the Neighbourhood Watch Regulations 1975 under the Emergency Ordinance Act 1969, which is to be repealed soon.

"We welcome any public feedback and suggestions to further improve the Act," he told reporters at Parliament lobby here Monday.

On a related matter, he said the 130,000-odd members of Voluntary Patrolling Scheme were given a 24-our of accident insurance coverage.

"They are also given a bereavement allowance of RM1,000," he said.
He added that some 142 members had passed away between 2007 and 2010, adding that their deaths were not related to duty operations.

Voluntary patrolling should extend to all housing areas

KUALA LUMPUR: The Voluntary Patrolling Scheme (VPS) should be extended to all housing areas in the city to ensure security and help the authorities check crime, said Federal Territories and Urban Wellbeing Minister Datuk Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin.

"The VPS is capable of contributing to reducing crime rates and ensuring unity of the people is protected from any element that can cause worry and fear," he said after the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the National Unity and Integration Department and police in Taman Seri Sentosa, here, tonight.

He said the government was concerned about problems faced by the VPS and was ready to offer help if needed.

"The department is making effort to provide patrolling equipment and tackle the shortage of places to build Rukun Tetangga control centres to facilitate the VPS.  Read more .....
