Najib: MRT to transform Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR: The Klang Valley Sungai Buloh-Kajang MRT project is a landmark in the effort to transform the country into a modern and high-income nation, said Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

The Prime Minister said the MRT was not only an important transportation project for the people of the Klang Valley and Greater Kuala Lumpur, but it would also signify Malaysia's shift to a developed country.

He said while there was excitement when the project was launched two years ago, some were sceptical whether it would get off the ground.

Sprint Highway to close for 1 year

KUALA LUMPUR: MASS Rapid Transit Corporation Sdn Bhd (MRT Corp) has announced a 12-month closure of the left-most lane of the Sprint Highway, from the Bukit Kiara junction to the Jalan Maarof junction (Kuala Lumpur bound) starting today till Nov 14 next year.

This closure will be in effect from 9am to 4pm and 9pm to 6am daily. This is to facilitate construction work for the MRT.

The lane closure is being implemented after two trials recently were found to have no adverse impact on the Kuala Lumpur-bound traffic.

The first trial was carried out for a day and second for seven days, and on both occasions the traffic was moving with slight hold-up at the point where the traffic from Kerinchi Link (Kiara) merged with traffic from Petaling Jaya on the Damansara Link.    Read more ........    

TTDI Market to stay

THE Taman Tun Dr Ismail (TTDI) market will be retained at its original site. It will, however, be incorporated into the redevelopment of the area. 

The  Federal Territories and Urban Wellbeing Minister Datuk Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin in a meeting with the TTDI market action committee representatives at his office here, recently, the minister said the redevelopment is still in the pipeline.  Read more ............

Proposed TTDI MRT station shifted

KUALA LUMPUR: Residents of Jalan SS20/10 in Damansara Utama are relieved that Syarikat Prasarana Negara Bhd (SPNB) will not be building the proposed Taman Tun Dr Ismail (TTDI) MRT station in their neighbourhood.

According to the residents, the proposed station is expected to bypass their housing scheme and likely to be located next to the Caltex petrol station in Jalan Damansara. Read more ....    

Jalan SS20/10 residents: Don't take our only park

Petaling Jaya: Residents at Jalan SS20/10 in Damansara Utama want Syarikat Prasarana Negara Bhd (SPNB) to refrain from taking the only park in their neighbourhood for the Sungei Buloh/Kajang Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) project. SPNB had proposed to acquire and develop the green area, which is 2m from the residents' houses, as a car park and truck access for the Taman Tun Dr Ismail (TTDI) MRT station staff.

The residents are also asking SPNB to relocate the proposed TTDI MRT station at Jalan SS20/10. Read more .....

Malaysia's largest megaproject and first Mass Rapit Transit (MRT) project.
- The Greater KL MRT Project is one of the key initiative identified under the government's Economic Transformation Programme (ETP).
- Project Delivery Partner (project manager) awarded to MMC-Gamuda Joint Venture Sdn Bhd.
- Project owner is Syarikat Prasarana Negara Bhd.
- Project regulator and licensing authority is Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD).

- The Sg Buloh-Kajang MRT Line is the first of at least 3 MRT lines being planned, with a total length of 150km.
- Estimated total costs of three MRT lines is at least RM36.6 billion.
- The first phase is scheduled for ground breaking in July 2011 and fully operational by 2016.

- The whole MRT project is expected to create 130,000 jobs.
- The implementation is expected to generate Gross National Income of between RM3 billion and RM4 billion beginning 2011 until 2020.
- By 2020, the MRT is expected to carry 2 million riders, serving over 11% of total travel across Klang Valley and 64% of travel in and out of KL City Centre.

Sg Buloh-Kajang MRT
- Estimated to be between 60km to 65km in length.
- 35 stations, with 11 of them incorporating park-and-ride facilities.
- Population catchment of 1.2 million, with estimated daily ridership of 442,000.
- Between 9.5km and 10.5km of the length will be underground.
- The portion that passes through densely populated area such as Damansara and KL Central Business District will be underground.
- A ride from the first to the last station will take approximately 90 minutes.

- Integration with existing KTM Komuter stations in Sungai Buloh and Kajang.
- Integration with existing LRT stations either at KL Sentral or Pasar Seni and Maluri.
- May integrate with future MRT Line stations at Pusat Bandar Damansara and KL International Financial District (KLIFD).
- Connectivity for upcoming mega urban development area such as Sg Buloh RRIM, Warisan Merdeka, KLIFD and Cochrane City.

Divided opinions over MRT project

KUALA LUMPUR: About half of respondents agree that the first proposed mass rapid transit line from Sungai Buloh to Kajang will save time, cost and reduce congestion while the other half say it will cause noise, dust and floods. Some of the respondents also wanted to know if they would be resettled. The findings of the environmental impact assessment (EIA) report was released yesterday by the Department of Environment.

The survey, by ERE Consulting Group Sdn Bhd, had interviewed 700 residents in the affected areas.

The EIA further reported that 473 lots of land would likely be acquired for the Sungai Buloh-Kajang (SBK) Line.
