Total ban on polystyrene in Selangor from Jan 1

BUSINESSMEN in Selangor will face a RM1,000 fine if they use polystyrene packages come January 2017.

The fine comes following the new policy set by the state government that bans the use of polystyrene and promotes reduced plastic bag usage next year. The ban will take effect on Jan 1.

Selangor State Tourism, Environment, Green Technology and Consumer Affairs Committee chairman Elizabeth Wong said the fine was the standard amount for any breach of licence condition.

She said several additional conditions had been added to the by-laws to incorporate the new ruling.

Semenyih 2 Water Treatment Plant

ONE hundred million litres a day.

This is the volume of water the Semenyih 2 water treatment plant in Dengkil, will produce upon its scheduled completion by December 2017.

Commissioned by Selangor government, the plant will serve some 100,000 consumers in Semenyih, Beranang, parts of Hulu Langat and new developments along the Kajang-Seremban Highway (Lekas). READ MORE .......

Selangor govt launches campaign to conserve water

IN VIEW of the current heat wave, the Selangor state government has started a water conservation campaign called Jom Jimat Air as a safety measure.

Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali said the campaign was one of the state government’s contingency plans to ensure the people of Selangor had a seamless supply of clean water.

The objective of the campaign is also to create an awareness and instil a culture of conserving water, he added.

New Anti-Dumping Law for Selangor in the Works

SELANGOR plans to formulate a new law to check on illegal dumping in the state and bring the culprits to book, said State Local Government committee chairman Ean Yong Hian Wah.

Absence of such a law has led to rampant illegal dumping of garbage, he added.

“The enactment will allow the state to impose heavy penalties including high fines and stiffer punishment against those found guilty of committing the offence,” he said. Read more ......

 

Selangor Targets 24-Hour Pothole Fixes With New Filler Premix Read

Called Cold-Mix Carboncor, this new premix formula is what road maintenance contractors in Selangor will be using to patch up potholes within the state, which during its launch at the JKR office in Gombak was cited to allow potholes to be fixed within 24 hours of being reported.

Zaidy Abdul Talib, State Infrastructure and Public Facilities Committee chairman, said that concessionaires would be instructed to patch up every pothole within their respective areas as soon as possible, with a loose time frame set at within one day. Using the excuse of low or insufficient funding would not be accepted, writes The Star. 

“In the past, concessionaires only patched up potholes based on a budget but now they have to patch up every pothole,” Zaidy said, adding that the bidding process for the new five-year agreement have already begun as the current concession agreements will end on December 31st.    Read more ......

Damansara Utama School reaps benefit ot solar energy project

Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Damansara Utama (SMKDU) in Petaling Jaya, Selangor, is now a proud "green power producer" after its solar photovoltaic rooftop project received the approval of the Sustainable Energy Development Authority.

With the approval, the school would now have a guaranteed annual income for the next 21 years under the Feed-in Tariff (FiT) mechanism.

The solar power project at the school was implemented by Cypark Resources Bhd under its corporate responsibility Adopt-a-School programme. Read more ....

Selangor to start waste separation in selected housing schemes

In an effort to reduce its carbon footprint, the Selangor government is planning to introduce a pilot project on waste separation in selected housing schemes later this year.

State exco for local government, new village development, legalising of factories chairman Ean Yong Hian Wah said residents would have to separate their solid waste and scheduled collection would be carried out.

“We are still in the midst of finalising the areas and it will be started in stages at the housing schemes. What we want to see is the behaviour of the residents and how much waste they generate,” he said.

“We will start with a simple way of separating the garbage into two components, which is recyclable and general waste. Two days will be allocated for the collection of general waste and one day for recyclable items,” he said ... Read more ...

Kidex part of Selangor’s long-term urban plan, says MB

SUBANG JAYA, May 20 ― The Kinrara-Damansara Expressway (Kidex) is an integral part of Selangor's new structural plan for 2035, Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim said today, in yet another sign that the controversial  project is here to stay.

Despite growing objections by some residents in Petaling Jaya, the Selangor mentri besar reaffirmed that the highway, in addition to improving public transportation, is necessary for the state's future growth.

“All these projects, Kidex, MRT...we cannot look for a quick solution.“
When there is density, there must be preparations so that we can help people move from one place to another,” he told reporters at a news conference.  Read more .......

Experts: Water woes far from over

PETALING JAYA: Water supply woes are far from over although rationing has been called off.

Experts have warned that water crises in the Klang Valley may be the norm until the completion of the Langat 2 treatment plant in Selangor.

S. Piarapakaran, president of the Association of Water Energy Re­­­search (Awer) said Selangor’s water treatment reserve margin was too low to guarantee constant flow during dry seasons or unexpected plant shutdowns. Read more

Selangor to start water rationing tomorrow

SHAH ALAM: Selangor is to enforce water rationing throughout the state tomorrow in areas where there has been disruption since Feb 7.
Mentri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim said water would be rationed in stages so that all areas would receive supply every two days.

"We pledge that every consumer will receive water, but it will be rationed to ensure supply every two days.

"In a week, consumers will receive water for four days," he told reporters after attending the monthly gathering of civil servants, here.  Read more

Dengue cases spike due to current wet weather

PETALING JAYA: Dengue cases went up by 19% the past week to 1,680 cases compared to the previous week (1,408) - the highest recorded over 10 years - mainly due to the wet weather.
Selangor registered the largest increase with 1,142 cases (272 cases the previous week).
The cumulative total of reported cases of dengue fever nationwide from January to Oct 26 is 28,707 cases, a 58% increase from the same period last year (17,847), the Health Ministry said in a statement.
It noted that Selangor saw a significant upswing in cases since June, with 323 of the 408 current outbreak areas found in the state.
Out of the outbreak areas, 54 were identified as high-risk hotspots - 26 in the Petaling district, 19 in Hulu Langat, eight in Gombak and one in Sepang.    read more ..... 

Dengue prevention in the home

1. Tip out water from things like flower pot bases, plastic containers or tin cans. .

2. Store anything that can hold water undercover or in a dry place, including tyres, gardening equipment, toys, pails.

3. Throw out any rubbish lying around your garden like leaves in gutters, fallen palm fronds and unused containers or tyres.

Clogged drains main cause of rise in dengue outbreak

CLOGGED drains are among the main causes of dengue outbreaks, which has increased by 17% from 2011 to 2012.

Health, entrepreneurship development, science, technology and innovation committee chairman Dr Daroyah Alwi said this in reply to Gan Pei Nei’s (PR-Rawang) query about rising number of cases at some dengue hotspots.

Klang tops the list with the highest number of cases, with 1,366 in 2011 and 2,291 in 2012.

This is followed by the Petaling district which recorded 2,004 cases in 2011 and 2,554 in 2012.  Read more ..... 

Six Residents’ Associations receive RM10,000 grant

SIX Residents’ Associations (RAs) in Puchong were among the first in Selangor to receive RM10,000 under the RA Grant to enhance security and safety features in their neighbourhoods.

Bandar Puteri 12 RA chairman Alan Tam, whose association was among the recipients, said the grant would go towards installing additional security features such as boom gate and CCTVs in their housing area.

The grants were presented after a briefing by the Selangor Registrar of Societies (RoS) on the requirements and details of the initiative.

The grant, which is allocated under Budget 2013, is presented as an initiative to create a safe and harmonious neighbourhood.

The Government has allocated RM40mil for 4,025 RAs nationwide registered under the RoS for the RM10,000 grant.

“The RAs have to submit application forms either manually or online, complete with the proposed use of the grant, estimated cost of items and photos of the site,” said Selangor ROS director Noraffendy Abdul Khalid.  ... Read more .... ..

First woman mayor will fulfil her duties the best she can

MALAYSIA has a woman mayor — the first in the country. Her name is Datin Paduka Alinah Ahmad and she will take over the helm as Petaling Jaya mayor as of Jan 1, 2013.

Alinah will replace former mayor Datuk Mohamad Roslan Sakiman, who will assume duties as the deputy state secretary.

The first question StarMetro asked Alinah, who is currently Selangor Singular Real Property Housing Board chief executive officer, was how does it feel to be Malaysia’s first woman mayor?

“This is very important to me and I shall do my best to deliver. That is my main objective,” said Alinah, 63, who is busy clearing her work schedule as CEO until end of December.

She thanked the Selangor state government for giving her the honorific appointment.

Yes, she is the first woman mayor in Malaysia, but that does not make her special, she said.

“Yes, I am a lady, but I still have to prove that I can perform my mayoral duties.”   Read more ..........    

Petaling Jaya set to get Malaysia’s first woman mayor on Jan 1

PETALING JAYA: The Selangor Government has appointed Selangor Singular Real Property Housing Board chief executive officer Datin Paduka Alinah Ahmad (pic) as Petaling Jaya mayor effective Jan 1.

She will be the country's first female mayor.

“I believe her vast administrative experience at state and federal levels will make her an effective mayor,” said Selangor Mentri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim who announced the appointment after chairing the weekly exco meeting.

Alinah will replace Datuk Mohamad Roslan Sakiman who has been appointed deputy state secretary (development).   Read more ................

Petaling district tops list of dengue cases

SELANGOR has recorded 7,655 cases of dengue from January to November this year.

Health, plantation workers, poverty and caring government committee chairman Dr Xavier Jeyakumar said out of the number, 12 deaths were reported.

Petaling District tops the list with 2,149 cases, followed by Klang (2,014), Hulu Klang (1,844) and Gombak (796).

Dr Xavier also said that Klang recorded the highest number of deaths (four) while Petaling and Hulu Langat recorded three deaths each.

“Gombak and Kuala Langat had one death each. And all the cases were caused by haemorrhagic dengue,” said Dr Xavier.

He was answering a question by Phillip Tan Choon Swee (PR-Teluk Datuk) on the statistics of dengue cases according to districts in Selangor.

POLICE chiefs in all districts in Selangor have been urged to check the official e-mails that come in from the public so as to maintain good relations and build a network for information on crime patterns.

Selangor police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Tun Hisan Tun Hamzah said all districts have an official e-mail and the public can send information or constructive suggestions on crime.

“Our men are required to read through the e-mails and filter the information for action to be taken. I want all officers in-charge of the police departments (OCPD) in the districts to check the e-mails and build a network of contacts,” he said.

DCP Tun Hisan added that the public can use the e-mail channel to seek clarification on various matters.  Read more ........  

Selangor cops to give weekly updates on crime

SHAH ALAM: The Selangor police will hold a weekly media briefing to ensure the public receive accurate information on crime.

Citing recent crime activities that were reported in social network sites, Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishamuddin Hussein said the briefing was necessary to disseminate undistorted information.

“There have been several occurrences of crime lately in malls here. Such occurrences were first seen via Facebook and other social networks.

“To avoid half baked stories and allegations, we have decided to hold weekly meetings with media representatives. This way, information received by the public will be straight from the horse's mouth,” he said at the Selangor police headquarters yesterday.  Read more .......   

2,000 former detainees could be roaming the streets of Selangor

PETALING JAYA: With the repeal of emergency and preventive detention laws there could be as many as 2,000 former detainees roaming free in Selangor, Tan Sri Ramon Navaratnam said.

The sharp rise in crimes in Selangor recently could be attributed to this, said Ramon, who is the Selangor chapter adviser of Malaysia Crime Prevention Foundation.

He said there had been an obvious surge in serious crime cases in Selangor despite statistics showing a decline in the overall crime index.

“In Selangor, about 2,000 detainees were released when the laws were repealed,” Ramon said.  Read more ......
