Befriend the police to fight crime, public urged

KLANG: Selangor police chief Datuk Tun Hisan Tun Hamzah has asked the public to make the police their friend to ensure effective crime prevention in residential areas.
"If you see policemen stopping a man by the roadside, you think they are asking for bribes, although they could be just asking for directions," he said during the ground-breaking ceremony of a new police beat base at Bandar Parklands here yesterday.
Tun Hisan added that police beat bases in housing areas should not only be regarded as a place to lodge reports but also a meeting point to discuss public safety. Read more ....

Be open to gated-and-guarded concept

If a residential area is not safe, frequent break-ins and snatch thefts will not only cause the residents sleepless nights, it will also chase potential property buyers away.

However, if it is done in haste and without proper planning, it may backfire in cases of emergency and will no doubt cause conflicts among property owners, which has happened in some areas. Read more ...

MRT Noise Level

One of our residents was at the Department of Environment and he obtained the above diagram on noise level mapping from the MRT EIA (Environmental Impact Assessment) report.

1) Almost the whole of SS20 will experience noise level above 70 dB(A), except the areas around the Southern zone field.

2) SS20/10 Northern zone will be within the 80 dB(A) contour, while houses behind SS20/10 will experience 75 dB(A)

3) Some comparisons on what the above dB(A) noise level means:

a) Train whistle at 150 metres away, or Truck Traffic = 90 dB(A)
b) City Traffic (inside car) = 85 dB(A)
c) Kerbside of busy road at 5 metres away= 80 dB(A)
d) Telephone dial tone = 80 dB(A)
e) Vacuum cleaner, 1 metre away = 70 dB(A)
f) Conversational speech, 1 metre away = 60 dB(A)

4) The Selangor DOE permissible noise level from factories = less than 70 dB(A) in the day time and less than 60 dB(A) at night. For factories next to residential areas, the permissible noise level is even lower.

Security Update

At around 3 am on Monday, a thief climbed into the garden of a house in the central zone and stole a smart tag and gps from the owner’s car. Car was not locked.
CCTV images showed the thief to be a young Indian man but could not get the appearance of his face because he covered part of his face. He probably knew that there was a camera pointing at him.

Recycling cooking oil into biodiesel

Housewives, students and restaurateurs are saving up their used cooking oil – for a good reason.

INSTEAD of pouring fryer oil down the sink like she used to, Sheila Varghese now dutifully tips the stale fats into an old water bottle. And once that is full, she heads to the central rubbish disposal shed at her condo in Petaling Jaya, Selangor, and empties it into a huge drum. This has become a common practice among the residents of Armanee Terrace. The grease collection drive is a green move among the condo residents and management to recycle used cooking oil into biodiesel.

“If we don’t do this, all the oil ends up in pipes and grease traps,” says Varghese. “Not all the oil is removed, so the grease still goes into the sewerage system. This makes water treatment to remove the oil more difficult. So the oil eventually ends up in our water supply and comes back to us. If all of us prevent oil from entering drains and rivers, then we’ll be helping ourselves and reducing the maintenance cost of our condos’ grease traps.”

MBPJ brightens lanes with solar powered lights

SEVERAL dark backlanes and small roads in Petaling Jaya have been installed with more than 120 solar-powered lights under the Petaling Jaya City Council’s (MBPJ) safe city programme.

This is the council’s inaugural project after receiving funds of more than RM1mil (for last year) from the Implementation Coordination Unit under the Prime Minister’s Department.

The MBPJ engineering department (mechanical and electrical division) assistant engineer Mohd Hazimi Khalid said the project had four packages with each focusing on the different sections of Petaling Jaya.

As SS20 does not have these lights installed in our backlanes, the police has suggested that we arrange with our neighbours and take turns to switch on our back lights .....

No acquisition of homes in Taman Tun Dr Ismail

KUALA LUMPUR: There is a glimmer of hope for residents in Taman Tun Dr Ismail who have had sleepless nights ever since notices appeared in their neighbourhood stating that their land may be acquired for the proposed mass rapid transit (MRT) project.
This is because their land may not be needed for the project after all.

The Land Public Transport Commission said, in a statement, that the final decision on the land acquisition would only be made after the public display ends in May.
